In 1948 American landscape photographer Adams started serving as a Polaroid consultant, testing equipment and films new. He continued using the task for the majority of the career of his – surprisingly, maybe, given Adams’ methodical approach to photography and the renowned fondness of his for long exposure times.
As Warhol Wrote “My best pictures from the 1950’s onward have been made on Polaroid film. One look at the tonal quality of the print I’ve accomplished should persuade the uninitiated of the really better quality of Polaroid film.”
Warhol’s interest in celebrity culture and commercial art was best suited for Polaroid. He shot a large archive of Polaroid photos of himself, friends and celebrities.
Warhol said: “Mr Land invented this terrific camera referred to as a Polaroid,” Warhol said. “There is actually a thing about the digital camera which makes the individual look just right. I take a minimum of 200 pictures and then I want. At times I take half a lip and a picture from another picture.”
British artist Hockney experimented with new means of seeing, by piecing several viewpoints together employing a Polaroid to produce photocollages, which he called “joiners”.
“I began making collage photographs since I realised you can create a different room, you are setting up time, and they started to be unique and also you have a different space. I got fascinated by that, really, as well as spent a great three months simply using, making complicated Polaroid photographs, which are much more complicated to create than they look.”
Polaroid provided the great Depression documentarian Walker Evans with a limitless source of film for the SX-70 of his in 1973, as well as the ease of the Polaroid made it easy for an infirm Evans to shoot during his ultimate years. “Nobody should touch a Polaroid until he’s more than 60,” said Evans.
Greek multimedia artist Lucas Samaras wasn’t happy with the results of the Polaroid SX-70, he manipulated the photos he printed out with eyes. AS a result the self portraits with its patterned background were intense and give him inspiration to his writing.
